Being a group of student bloggers, juggling their time with school and blogging can be a challenging mission to accomplish. Shermaine Lee, Co-editor of the blog quoted “All six of us will make it compulsory to stay back after school at least thrice a week in order to gauge and discuss about the progress of our blog.”
As a result of the high amount of bloggers competing, THEHUMANNEQUIN has developed a different approach so as to retain readership and interest them.
Instead of obtaining information online and posting it on the blog, the unique selling point of THEHUMANNEQUIN is entirely based on personal experience.
“Because we are competing against many other bloggers, we decided to use personal experiences, as not only have we experienced it personally, readers can also be assured of its authenticity and credibility,” said Charissa Selvasekaran, Editor of Thehumannequin.

The Other Face of Steve JobsWhile remembered as the edison of our time, the failures of Steve Jobs are just as inspiring.
By Charissa Selvasekaran
Subtle curves, yet sleek and elegant.
Even if you don’t own an iPhone or iPad, you certainly know someone who does.
iPod Touch is my favourite Steve Jobs invention. What is yours?
As I read through countless eulogies remembering the black turtleneck and blue jeans icon, there is one word that resonates repeatedly. Finally succumbing to pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2011, “Visionary” is the legacy left behind by a man who revolutionized technology.
Many choose to remember Steve Jobs for his innovations that kept the world at its feet for products they did not know they would need until they saw it. However, as the Apple slogan goes – “Think Different”, I choose to remember Steve Jobs for his failures.

College Dropout Billionaire
It’s no wonder why to many of us, Jobs is the epitome of Creative, Innovator or Genius.
In 1972, Jobs enrolled in Reed College only to quit six months later. He would later go on to say it was one of the best decisions of his life.
“It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made.”
Though he dropped out of college, Jobs continued to attend a Calligraphy class at Reed.
His curiousity for fancy handwriting fueled him to satisfy the interest despite having to sleep on the dorm room floor of friends, earn food allowance by returning Coke bottles and eat free weekly meals at a local Hare Krishna temple.
Lesson: Find what interests you.
Public Failure at 30

Public Failure at 30
Jobs Co-founded Apple Inc at 21 and was shown the door at 30.
With the wild success that preceded him, Jobs defeat was publicly huge and it left him distraught. But he still loved what he did, so he picked up the pieces and started NeXt.
Once again Jobs would meet setbacks along the way when the company was not as thriving as he had aimed it would be.
It was only 13 years later that Jobs developed an operating system that eventually led Apple Inc to buy NeXT.
Steve Jobs returned to Apple Inc as CEO.
Lesson: Sometimes you have to create your own opportunities.
The Cube
The Cube
Power Mac G4 Cube as its name suggests was an eight-inch computer which shape resembled a cube was one of Steve Jobs notable failures.
Despite winning awards for its unconventional design, The Cube had no added functional benefits. It failed to survive the sales market with its over-priced tag and was suspended just a year after its launch.
With the demise of Power Mac G4 Cube in 2001, the way people consumed music was to change forever. It started with the iPod and the rest is history.
Lesson: Failure is inevitable, it happens to the very best of us.
Of course the world will never remember Steve Jobs by his failures. Instead he will be remembered as the man who made a dent in technology history with his audacious knack to transform failures into success.
It is based on this that I leave you with one final lesson I have learnt –
It’s not about how many times you fail. It’s about the legacy you choose to leave behind.

Fashionistardom with Fashionistadam
Monday, 9 January 2012 | (0) Leave A Comment
Dressing fashionably yet conforming to the school rules of Republic Polytechnic has been a difficult feat for most students. However Saddam proves them wrong, as he has a solution for both.
Thehumannequin caught up with Saddam to find out his take on this issue.
Fashion requires inspiration. For Saddam, it was not any different. He started out with magazines and reality fashion shows which sparked his interest on fashion. Introduced to the world of fashion by his uncle in 2009, Saddam hopes to turn his perpetual obsession in fashion into a long term career.
Dressing decent yet fashionable to school is never a chore for him as he quoted, “Just cover up, and get inspiration from any sources you can find and most importantly, mix and match the clothing in your wardrobe. Be bold.”
ZARA and Calvin Klein are brands that he favours and are boutiques that he frequents. However, when placed across a question if branded goods are what define fashion, Saddam remarked “No. You can dress in affordable clothing but then you have to style it appropriately according to your body type.”
“It’s not a need to dress fashionably, it’s my own inspiration. What I wear reflects my inner feelings.” Saddam quipped.
A fan of coats, he has a vast collection of them in his wardrobe which he dons a different one to school every day, styling it in many ways.
When asked on tips and advice for fashion, Saddam says “Remember, it is not about the branding of the clothes, it is about understanding your body type and dressing appropriately to it.”
So, Hummanequins, now it is your turn to get inspired with fashion. What does dressing fashionably yet conforming to school rules mean to you? Share your comments below!

Prisoner of ObesophobiaWhile many are unaware of the term obesophobia, they are subconsciously falling prey to this disorder.
By Aneesa Beham
Have you ever experienced an alarming fear of weight gain, obsession with weight loss or an inability to see yourself as anything but obese? If your face turns red or sweaty hearing these symptoms, then you might be at risk of facing Obesophobia.
Fear of weight gain is communal. However the moment it turns into paranoia, it results into a psychiatric disorder, classified as Obesophobia or also known as Pocrescophobia.
Obesophobia occurs to one when just a passing thought of weight gain or obesity instigates an overwhelming fear which is off the norm. This emerging problem of personal battle seems to be at its peak among young folks. Hence, people braving this fear often deals with internal apprehension caused by external manipulation.
The easiest pick for a possible reason for the fear would be the exposure to media. Media has the utmost influence on how one should perceive an idea. The unnatural but desired body shape of size zero for females, while a well buffed and masculine body for males have caused society to fall under the norm it sets. To don a body like Angelina Jolie or to own abs like Ryan Gosling might be a dream come true for most.
While media is placed at one side of the equilibrium, peer pressure weighs the other. As much as media influences one on body shape, peer pressure seems to be the after-effect of it. To keep themselves physically attractive as how the "popular girls" or "cool dudes" look like and define beauty as, are some of the contributing factors for one to face the fear of gaining weight.
Since being thicker is deemed as a sin in the current society, these folks get out of control the moment they think of a kg heavier. Hence, they undergo eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa which are the end results of Obesophobia.
Personally, being a person who suffered from Obesophobia once, I tried to overcome the fear of weight gain through diverting my thoughts to various activities. For instance, I jogged regularly and made myself active with sports like badminton and basketball. In addition, I also controlled my food intake. Thus, it made me feel more confident and guilt-free. Therefore, this is a problem that you can overcome through determination and the control over your thoughts. Remember, nothing is impossible.
So humannequins, be the architect of your own life. Don’t let society impose their definitions of beauty upon you. Think again, are you going to be a prisoner of this syndrome or fight this battle to crown victory? The decision is solely up to you.
Writer’s note: This is one of my favourite songs sung by Pink. I listen to this song whenever I feel life is pulling me down. And if you’re feeling the same too, listen to this song and get motivated to move on. Remember YOU ARE PERFECT TO ME.

Dark circles, be gone!
5 quick steps to reducing dark circles
By Shermaine Lee
By Shermaine Lee
Dark circles. The persistent enemy of most women, making them look older than they really are. There are many factors that contribute to these unsightly marks, ranging from heredity to the lack of sleep. The trick that most of us do is to hide them behind layers and layers of concealer, touching up on them every few hours. But even this is not enough- many want to get to the root of the problem.
I myself, a victim of dark circles and have been trying very hard to get rid, or at least reduce the appearance of them. Most of the home remedies that I have tried were unsuccessful, (e.g. cucumber slices, freezing table spoons etc.) till I tried this, and have been faithful towards it ever since.
It is a simple home recipe that I chanced upon while looking for remedies on the web and though skeptical about it, I decided to give it a go (what could I lose?). The results were by far the best out of the many home remedies that I have tried and I would like to share it with you.
By using natural ingredients, not only is it inexpensive, you also do not need to worry about harmful chemicals or preservatives. Tea contains tannic acid, which acts as a natural clarifying agent and Catecholase, an enzyme which is found in potatoes helps the skin lightens.
You will need:
1) A medium size potato
2) Two black tea bags (any brand)
3) Two pieces of paper napkins
4) ¼ cup hot water
4) ¼ cup hot water
5) Grater
Steps:
1) Empty contents of tea bags into hot water, stir it
2) Set mixture aside in refrigerator
3) Grate ½ potato
4) Add cooled down tea mixture with grated potatoes
4) Add cooled down tea mixture with grated potatoes
5) Place equal amounts of mixture onto napkins (2 table-spoons), place on dark circles for 10-15 minutes
The results:
Before
After
*100% natural. Pictures used were in no way photoshopped or post-processed.
I used this remedy for 10-15 minutes every day for three days in order to have those dark circles reduced. Depending on how bad your dark circles are, the duration and results may vary according to individuals.

Movie Review: Breaking Dawn Breaks Back By Aneesa Beham & Charissa Selvasekaran
(Warning: This article contains spoilers)

While Harry Potter fans are suffering from Post-Potter Depression, Twihards are satisfying their vampire obsession with the recent release of Breaking Dawn: Part 1.
Similar to Harry Potter, the fourth and final installment of the Twilight Saga adopted the latest trend of stretching one book into two movies.
Taylor Lautner, shirtless is a great way to start the film and leaves fan girls drooling at his perfectly chiseled abs. The 19-year-old heartthrob sheds his shirt upon receiving an invitation to Edward’s (Robert Pattinson) and Bella’s (Kristen Stewart) luxurious wedding. However, don’t let the abs steer you away from the emotional performance he delivers. Staying true to the character Jacob Black, Lautner executes an image of masculinity on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside. His sad puppy face due to Jacob’s protective nature over Bella makes you want to reach out and give him a warm hug.
The actress popularly known for her sleek hair and flawless complexion indeed justified her role as Bella Cullen in the movie Breaking Dawn. Kristen Stewart, who donned only three expressions (bemused, more bemused and extremely bemused) for her previous movies, broke her stoic image by proving herself as a versatile actress. With emotions ranging from strong, stubborn and sizzling (piping hot in her lingerie) Bella in the first half of the movie, she moved the audience with sympathy in her pale and anorexic look in the second half. A special mention to her realistic acting skills towards the climax, especially the bone breaking scene which caused the theater audience gasps in shock and disgust.
Robert Pattinson, who plays the slender but mascular bodied vampire Edward Cullen, portrayed his consistent performance throughout the four movies. His love and concern towards Bella made every girl yearn for a husband like him. Not to forget his suddenly blossomed fatherly compassion towards his half human-half vampire hybrid daughter Renesmee was indescribable.
Though the movie stayed true to the portrayal of the novel, the slow pace of the movie can leave viewers agitated. Renesmee, the youngest and newest addition to the film is just as adorable and beautiful as she was described in the book. We can’t help but understand why Jacob imprints on her. It is hard not to imprint ourselves when we look into those big eyes with innocence aglow.
What takes us most by awe is the transformation from a stunning Bella Swan to sick and unacceptably cadaverous pregnant Bella Cullen which was marvelous. Standing ovations to Bill Condon for going that extra mile to shoot the climax (the bone-breaking scene and the delivery scene) incredibly, as it was convincing and realistic.

Wonders of Make-Up: Plain Jane to Rock Chic
Our very own writer goes for a simple transformation
Our very own writer goes for a simple transformation
By Farhana Aziz, Shermaine Lee and Vivian Koh
Photos taken by Shermaine Lee
Sneakers, shorts and tee-shirts are what defines her. Vivian does not go the extra mile to better her appearance and dresses like that every day. Wanting to help her shed that image, I (Farhana) asked her to be my model for make-up.
I thought that it would be good if she tried something new. Upon several attempts to convince her, she finally agreed to my request.
These are the make-up products I used:
1. Silkygirl Blush Hour 04 Honeywood
2. Studio M.A.C Fix NC 42
3. Silkygirl Shimmer Duo Blusher
4. Canmake Liquid Eyeliner
5. The Hypercurl Volume Express Waterproof Maybelline
6. Faceshop Lovely Stick Concealer
7. Blusher Brush
8. Eyeshadow Brush
I started off with giving her a nice foundation base powder to complement with her skin tone. I used a blusher brush since her face is wide to make sure the powder spreads out evenly.
To conceal off her dark circles, uneven skin tone and blemishes, I marked out the spots with a concealer. After that, I blended the concealer to even it out.
I used a blusher to highlight her overall features such as cheekbones, chin and forehead temples. Silkygirl Honeywood was used as it has an orangey glow that brings out her sun-kiss tan. Then, the Shimmer Duo Blusher was applied next to bring out her rosy cheeks.
To enhance her eyes, a “batwing” eyeliner style was used. The style is thick and has extended winged line to make the eyes look bigger.
My favourite part – the mascara. As Vivian has long eyelashes, the mascara would be of good help to give it an increased volume and better curls.
After 20 minutes into the process, I present to you her final look:
So what do you think? Does she look more refined? Share your comments here or on our Facebook page! :)
